Namibia has good financial infrastructure. Financial regulation in Namibia is sound, but archaic laws need to be reformed and Legislation reform is in process, new laws have been enacted, amendments.

The establishment of the Competition Commission, whose role is to enforce competition laws and ensure that there are no competition distortions to all firms operating in the market as well as to potential firms wanting to enter the market, has created a good platform for financial institutions to work on.

There is good local financial services infrastructure, though, with National Payment System as a backbone. With the reform of the National Payment System, the Namibian banking industry managed to establish local payment infrastructure for the clearing and settlement of domestic transactions.

The Namibia Inter-bank Settlement System (NISS) facilitates settlement of Namibian interbank transactions, while a payment clearing house (NAMCLEAR) is also in place.

The local switch (NAMSWITCH) enables all Namibian inter-bank Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card transactions to be switched locally and settled as well as Point-of-Sale terminals card transactions to be switched locally and settled in NISS.
